Pride in Hull is a registered charity, run entirely by volunteers on a not for profit basis. We make Pride in Hull happen because we love it and we’ve seen first-hand the effects it has on individual people’s lives and on the community as a whole.
Members of the team have run Pride events in Hull (in some form or other) for almost 20 years. We came from humble beginnings (just a few of us in Queen’s Gardens with a really loud sound system) and took a few detours along the way (bringing Alexandra Burke to West Park in 2012 and Sinitta – in a fully customised Hull City strip – to Baker Street in 2016), before coming right back to where it started. And by 2017 we’d made a lot of friends to bring back to Queen’s Gardens with us.
The remit of our event is simple. We’re here to celebrate the LGBT+ community with our friends and allies. We’re here to celebrate diverse sexualities and genders. We’re here to uplift communities. We’re here to tell people that they do fit in here. And we do it with a great big massive party. We’ve got pretty good at it too.
2017 was a bumper year for Pride in Hull. Not only did we represent the city on a national stage when we were we named as the inaugural UK Pride, we were also the cornerstone of Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s LGBT50 programme.
Over 44,000 people joined us across the day and enjoyed our rich programme of culture, which saw local legend Bobby Mandrell share a stage with synthpop icon Marc Almond, denim-clad hitmakers B*Witched and drag megastar and Celebrity Big Brother 2018 winner Courtney Act (to name only four). Arts Council England officially found that LGBT50 was one of the most ‘important’ events of 2017.
Which brings us bang up to date. In 2018, we built on the success of our City of Culture year in a BIG way. It seemed like the whole city lined the streets to cheer on this year’s parade and 50,000 people (that’s a fifth of the population of the entire city!) put on their dancing shoes and partied with us over the course of the day. We were the second biggest cultural event in Hull and… not to brag, we’re the biggest free Pride in the whole country.
